💧 “From River to Sea: Time to Stop Plastic” — Monitoring together under the OSPAR methodology

INCA, in collaboration with the local operator Grand Canion in Elbasan, carried out monitoring of the Shkumbin River banks according to the OSPAR methodology, at two designated points: Elbasan and Librazhd. This monitoring mission is extended across all four seasons of the year, and the data presented here reflect the spring season.
📊 The spring results revealed that the overall quantity of waste collected was lower compared to other periods, but in composition plastic overwhelmingly dominated, accounting for about 95% of the waste. This included food packaging, plastic bottles, bags, and degraded plastic fragments. Other materials such as metal, glass, or textiles were found in very small amounts.
👉 The interpretation of these findings shows that the banks of the Shkumbin River remain under constant pressure from single-use plastics. Even when waste volumes are smaller, plastic persists as the dominant pollutant, fragmenting into microplastics that threaten aquatic ecosystems and the health of local communities.
🤝 The collaboration and involvement of local sport tourism operators further strengthens awareness and community engagement. This process goes beyond measuring pollution: it extends to developing solutions, spreading education, and raising awareness. Their participation transforms monitoring into a shared mission for a cleaner environment, a more beautiful and healthier river, and ultimately a cleaner sea.
đź’ˇ These results are a strong call to action: reducing single-use plastics and improving waste management are essential steps to protect the Shkumbin River and ensure a healthier environment for local communities.
