Shkumbin River Monitoring Process – Autumn & Winter

 

Within the BeMed+ project, the Agency of Sport and Tourism in Elbasan has carried out a continuous river monitoring process following the OSPAR methodology, starting in autumn and continuing in the winter season.

Monitoring was conducted at two testing points: Elbasan and Librazhd, providing a comprehensive picture of the river’s condition.

Key results:

• Plastic accounts for more than 90% of the identified litter.

• Drink bottles are the most widespread waste in both locations.

• Other sources of pollution include plastic fragments, food packaging, and polystyrene pieces.

The process was accompanied by clean-up actions in collaboration with schools, local authorities, and youth councils, turning scientific monitoring into concrete action for the environment.

Continuous monitoring helps us better understand pollution sources and strengthen community engagement for a cleaner Shkumbin River!
